Following its excellent ranking in the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) has once again repeated its good results in two other important international higher education rankings: the QS World University Ranking and the U-Multirank.
In what is considered one of the most prestigious international rankings, the QS World University Ranking, the University of Lisbon occupies the 357th position worldwide among the more than 1600 higher education institutions analyzed, occupying 1st place nationally, tied with the University of Porto. In an analysis of the different evaluation parameters, we find that ULisboa appears among the top 300 in the world in terms of academic reputation – 215th place globally – and ranks 345th among those with the highest average number of citations per professor.
In the U-Multirank, promoted by the European Commission, ULisboa achieved the highest scores – 9 “Very Good” and 7 “Good” – in 16 of the 32 indicators evaluated. Therefore, it is in the dimensions of Teaching and Learning, Research, and International Orientation that the University obtains the highest rankings. In a more detailed analysis, and if we focus on the scientific areas in which the Instituto Superior Técnico operates, we find excellent European-level rankings in Mechanical Engineering (1st place), Mathematics (3rd place), Materials Engineering (4th place), Environmental Engineering (5th place), and also Civil Engineering (9th place).
The U-Multirank is now in its 7th edition, and in 2020, it evaluated 1,800 universities from 92 countries, developing a multidimensional and innovative, user-oriented approach, distinct from traditional rankings, through a comparative analysis tool of institutional performance, particularly in terms of teaching and learning, research, knowledge transfer, international orientation, and regional engagement. The indicators are distributed across 5 areas of activity: Teaching and Learning, Research, Knowledge Transfer, International Orientation, and Regional Engagement. The evaluation scale has 5 levels ranging from "Very Good" to "Poor".
Compiled since 2012 by the British consulting firm Quacquarelli Symonds, the QS World University Ranking evaluates higher education institutions from 93 countries. This analysis incorporates over 100,000 responses from academics and more than 50,000 employers. The ranking of higher education institutions is based on six indicators: academic reputation, reputation among employers, student-to-faculty ratio, citations by faculty, international students, and international faculty.
