Áreas Científicas do Técnico entre as 50 melhores do mundo no Ranking de Xangai

The ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2018, released early Tuesday morning, places three disciplines from the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) among the top 50 universities in the world in the field of Engineering. ULisboa is ranked 4th in Naval and Ocean Engineering – falling only one place compared to last year's ranking – 10th in Remote Sensing and 45th best in the world in Civil Engineering, with all three disciplines being within the research fields of Técnico.

The ranking, which is based on an analysis of scientific output, distinguishes the two disciplines at Técnico both for their excellent performance in the number of articles published in leading journals, as well as for the percentage of articles produced in international collaboration.

ULisboa also stands out in the disciplines of Electronic Engineering (51-75), Water Resources (51-75), Control and Automation (76-100), Environmental Engineering and Sciences (101-150), Chemical Engineering (101-150), Mechanical Engineering (101-150), Energy Engineering and Science (101-150), Telecommunications Engineering (151-200) and Computer Engineering and Sciences (151-200), all scientific areas of Técnico.

Globally, in the field of Engineering, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) once again stands out, ranking highest in four of the disciplines analyzed: Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering. Harvard University also leads the overall ranking, excelling in 17 disciplines, including 9 in Social Sciences, 4 in Medical Sciences, 2 in Life Sciences, and 2 in Engineering.

There are 15 Portuguese educational institutions represented in this ranking across a wide variety of fields, with the Polytechnic Institute of Bragança being the only polytechnic institution to be included in the list.

Launched in 2009, the Shanghai Ranking by Subject is known as one of the most prestigious rankings in the world. The 2018 edition ranks a total of 4,000 universities across 54 subjects in the fields of Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medicine, and Social Sciences.

The evaluation is supported by indicators of scientific productivity and research quality, such as the number of publications, publications edited in high-impact journals, and the number of citations (based on the InCites database). International collaboration and academic awards granted to faculty and research staff are also among the indicators.
