The latest edition of the Shanghai Ranking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects, released this Wednesday, May 26th, places the University of Lisbon (ULisboa) among the top 50 universities in the world in three scientific areas where Técnico operates: Naval and Ocean Engineering (6th best in the world), Oceanography (44th), and Remote Sensing (50th). Also in the field of Civil Engineering, the institution holds a prominent position, ranking in the top 100 (51-75).
ULisboa also stands out among the top 101 and 150 in the world in: Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Automation and Control, Chemical Engineering, Energy Science and Engineering, Water Resources, and Transportation Science and Technology, all scientific areas of Técnico.
When it comes to the other disciplines evaluated in the Engineering area, the University is among the top 201-300 in Telecommunications Engineering, Science and Technology Instruments, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Environmental Science and Engineering, and Biotechnology; and among the top 301-400 in Materials Engineering and Science.
Also noteworthy in the field of Natural Sciences is its ranking in the scientific areas of Mathematics (151-200), Physics (151-200) and Earth Sciences (201-300); and in the field of Life Sciences, the ranking of Biological Sciences (201-300).
ULisboa leads nationally in 29 scientific areas and is ranked second in 9, positioning itself in 43 areas of the ranking. In the disciplines of Remote Sensing, Naval and Ocean Engineering, Water Resources and Statistics, it was even the only Portuguese university to be considered in the list.
In the field of Engineering, the leader is the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which obtained the highest ranking in 5 of the 22 disciplines evaluated in this field: Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Automation and Control, Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Materials Science and Engineering.
The ranking is once again dominated by American universities, which lead in 30 of the 54 areas evaluated, followed by Chinese universities, leading in 13 areas. Globally, Harvard University was the institution that stood out the most, occupying first place 15 times.
Considered one of the most prestigious in the world, the Shanghai Ranking by subject this year analyzed the scientific performance of more than 4,000 universities from 93 countries, across 54 disciplines grouped into 5 major scientific areas: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
The ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects is based on indicators of scientific productivity and research quality, such as the number of publications, publications edited in high-impact journals, and the number of citations (based on the Web of Science and InCites databases). Criteria such as international collaboration and academic awards granted to faculty and research staff are also valued (Methodology).
